Fitness Facts for Teens

Children of this age (14-17 years) have a good grasp on general motor skills and possess the memory capacity, coordination, and fundamental skills needed to participate in and excel at team sports.  However, this can be a difficult age for children to obtain the amount of physical activity needed to prevent weight gain that may lead to obesity, which makes it an important time to engage them in fun activities that will make exercise a lifelong habit. Those without an advanced level of sport-specific talent often drop out of organized play, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. Thus, teenagers in this age range are encouraged to take up intramural activities at local gyms and youth clubs or do recreational sports and activities with family and friends. Strength training in a supervised environment is safe for children in this age range and has numerous musculoskeletal benefits.

Suggested activities for teens include:
• Riding a bike
• Basketball
• Baseball
• Inline skating
• Dancing
• Soccer
• Hiking
• Rock climbing
• Supervised strength training
