Power Soccer Fact Sheet


History

Power Soccer is the most exciting sport for power wheelchairs. This is an extremely competitive sport that has been ongoing for over 18 years, but is just exploding here in the United States. Just recently, representatives and teams came from all over the world to unify rules so that all teams across the globe could play internationally. These countries include the United States, Canada, Japan, Denmark, France, Portugal, South Korea, Great Britain and Turkey.


What is it?

Power Soccer is a team sport played by individuals with various disabilities. It is unisex by design and male and female participants are often on the same team, as well as opposing sides. The game is usually played in a gymnasium, regulation basketball court or smooth outdoor facilities such as Greenbelt Recreation Center on Staten Island. Two teams of four power chair users attack, defend and maneuver a 13” soccer ball in an attempt to score points on a goal. The game is similar to the non-stop action seen in indoor soccer. This action packed team sport combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair, to participate in an extremely challenging game.


Who can play?

Participants include person with various disabilities that use power wheelchairs. Some examples of disabilities are quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma and stroke.


What is needed?

  • A 4 wheeled power wheelchair in good working condition (scooters not allowed)
  • Must be able to control your wheelchair
  • Minimum age is 5 years old
  • Parks will supply the ball and power soccer guard
