AmeriCorps Program

Do you want to give back to your community? Have you ever wanted to serve as a positive role model to our youth? If yes, we may have the opportunity for you with the City of New York/Parks & Recreation. Join our Urban Park Ranger AmeriCorps program. Participants have the opportunity to perform service to their community, train to become an environmental educator, take part in local environmental conservation projects with motivated high school students and discover the wild side of New York City .

AmeriCorps members work closely with our uniformed Rangers to make Nature Centers a vital part of our City parks. This includes working with the Ranger staff to create, improve and implement educational programs, lecture series, special events, interpretive exhibits and displays. AmeriCorps members help to increase the reach of the Urban Park Rangers, broaden community participation and foster a greater stewardship of parks.

Other benefits include a bi-weekly living stipend and education award. After completing the program, each member receives an education award, which can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or training, or to repay qualified student loans. If you already have student loans, you can use your education award to help pay them off. While you're an AmeriCorps member you may be eligible for deferment and forbearance on your student loans.

We have full-time and part-time positions available December 2004 that require up to a year commitment.
