- Commissioner Benepe speaks at the Madison Square Park Breakfast Fundraiser on Thursday, February 7 at 8:00 AM. Madison Square Park is bordered by East 23rd to East 26th Streets, Broadway, and Madison Avenue in Manhattan.
- Commissioner Benepe makes a press announcement about the upcoming Winter Festival 2002 on Thursday, February 7 at 11:00 AM in Central Park's East Meadow. Rescheduled from January 12 due to the unseasonably warm weather, the winter extravaganza is set to take place on Saturday, February 9 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. - Commissioner Benepe speaks at the opening reception of the Arsenal Gallery's new exhibit Reaching for the Sun: A Celebration of Black History Month on Thursday, February 7 at 6:00 PM. The collection ranges from quilts to paintings to puppets to photography, all of which were made by Parks employees and members of the city's recreation centers. The Arsenal Gallery, on the third floor of the Arsenal, is free and open to the public Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM. The Arsenal is located at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue inside Central Park.
- Bids are due from contractors today for dune reconstruction and erosion control at Bayview Park in Brooklyn. The park is located at Bayview Avenue, U.S. Pierhead Line, and Seagate Avenue. Bids are opened and reviewed by Management Services at the Olmsted Center, which is in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Flushing, Queens.
- Operations reports that Parks removed 27,673 tons of garbage from parks, playgrounds and beaches during the in-season of 2001. Parks' 139 waste removal vehicles made 8,362 trips to the new private waste transfer stations set up by the Department of Sanitation (DOS) after the closing of Fresh Kills for regular waste operations. Parks estimates the removal of over 48,000 tons or nearly 100 million pounds of waste in a full year.
- Parks celebrates the 16th National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Saturday, February 9 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Manhattan's Carmine Recreation Center. There will be sports demonstrations, instructional clinics, autographs, giveaways, and a panel discussion with female athletes and sports professionals. The purpose of this annual sports extravaganza is to recognize female achievement and participation in athletics. Carmine is located at 1 Clarkson Street and 7th Avenue South.
