  • Commissioner Stern speaks at 1:30 PM today at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the $240,100 reconstruction of Volunteer Playground. He is joined by Council Member Martin Golden, a Parks volunteer, members of the Fort Hamilton Senior Center and residents of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The playground is located at 81st Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn, on the southbound side of the 7th Avenue Expressway. There are refreshments to follow at the Fort Hamilton Senior Center, located at 99th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway.
  • The Parks Academy schedules a Conflict of Interest training session for Capital Projects personnel today from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Olmsted Center. This session is part of a series of classes requested by the Conflict of Interest Board. The Olmsted Center is located inside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Flushing, Queens.
  • The Deputy Commissioner and The Bronx Chief of Recreation visit the Bronx on January 16 to review maintenance and operations at selected recreation centers. The tour includes a general inspection of the facilities, informal dialogue with staff members and volunteers, and a brief review of center programming, membership, and attendance. The Deputy Commissioner visited four Brooklyn centers on January 15, and plans to tour recreation centers in Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island over the next two weeks.
  • On January 12 and 13, Queens processed approximately 300 cubic yards of wood created by removing trees infected with the Asian Longhorned Beetle. A piece of equipment called a tub grinder was borrowed from the city-wide division to chip the wood into a more manageable size for incineration.
  • Communications was notified of an illegal tree cutting in progress on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn on January 14th. Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) responded and summonsed the perpetrator for illegal tree pruning.
