  • Commissioner Stern, the First Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Counsel, the Chief of Central Forestry, and the Parks Advocate meet at 8:45 AM today for a Forestry meeting in the Arsenal Conference Room. The room is on the third floor of the Arsenal, located at 64th Street and 5th Avenue inside Manhattan's Central Park.
  • Preparations are underway for Commissioner Stern's 9th Annual State of the Parks address, which takes place on Friday, January 18 in the Arsenal Gallery at 11:00 AM. Parks highlights from the years 1994 to 2001 will be presented in a multimedia format, and there will be a presentation of the Emerald Awards.   • Bids were received from contractors on January 16 for the project to reconstruct Ten Heroes Traffic Triangle at Van Doren Street and 108th Street in Queens. The bids were opened and reviewed by Management Services at the Olmsted Center, located inside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens.
  • Operations reports that the new Storehouse Inspection Program is having positive results. Month five of random audits of the SMS (Storehouse Management System) inventories at the eleven storehouse locations are now complete. Scores on the random checks have improved from 44% correct in September to 92% correct in December. One facility accounted for the majority of remaining discrepancies and this matter has been addressed.
  • The Bronx River Alliance meets with the West Farms Friends of the Bronx River today to develop outreach strategies to raise the profile of that section of the river.
  • The Park & Recreation Manager (PRM) for District 14 in Queens meets with representatives from Surf Riders, a national group of surf enthusiasts, to discuss their participation in a monthly cleanup of the Rockaway, Queens beaches.
  • Parks is still in need of lifeguards! Interested candidates are encouraged to sign up for conditioning classes and qualifying tests at the West 59th Street Pool in Manhattan and Metropolitan Pool in Brooklyn. West 59th Street Pool is located at 533 W. 59th Street and 10th Avenue, and Metropolitan Pool is located at 261 Bedford Avenue at Metropolitan Avenue.
