- Commissioner Stern received an award from Trees New York on Monday, January 21 at their Street Tree Awards Benefit Reception. The ceremony took place from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Four Seasons, located at 99 East 52nd Street.
- Bid documents concerning erosion control and dune reconstruction in Bayview Park are available for contractor pick-up today. Bids from contractors are due on Wednesday, February 6. Bayview Park is located at Bayview Avenue, U.S. Pierhead Line, and Seagate Avenue in Brooklyn. Documents may be picked up from the Olmsted Center, which is in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Flushing, Queens.
- A Deputy Director of the Urban Park Rangers (UPR) met with representatives of WNET/Channel 13, the Central Park Conservancy, and the Museum of the City of New York to discuss a teacher training program to be held jointly on Saturday, March 16 in Central Park.
- UPR completed training of Central Park Conservancy education staff on leading the Rangers' new 'Natural Classroom' education programs.
- A Deputy Director of the UPR met with officials of the Board of Education, who agreed to distribute promotional materials for The Natural Classroom program through internal channels such as District Coordinator meetings. The Board of Education is also providing information on how to register for the program on their website, which provides a direct link to the UPR pages on the Parks website.
- In one week of booking programs, the Central Booking Coordinator for the UPR registered a total of 75 Natural Classroom programs for the upcoming season. More information on The Natural Classroom>>
Education news from the Urban Park Rangers:
- A Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) officer issued a summons to a citizen for removal of a city tree in Brooklyn on Friday, January 18.
- A new photography exhibit entitled Images of African American Life opened at Historic Richmond Town on Saturday, January 19 and runs until Thursday, February 28. Historic Richmond Town is located at 441 Clarke Avenue inside La Tourette Park in Staten Island.
- There is still time to see the Mapmaker, Make Me A Map exhibit in the Arsenal Gallery. On view until Monday, January 28 are a variety of historical and digital maps used by the City of New York/Parks & Recreation. Included in the collection is aerial photography from the World Trade Center rescue and recovery operation. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. The Arsenal Gallery is on the third floor of the Arsenal, located at 64th Street and 5th Avenue inside Manhattan's Central Park.
