  • Commissioner Stern attends the New York Waterway's christening of their newest ferry, the Austin Tobin, at 11 AM today. The ceremony takes place at Battery Park's Pier A, at the end of West Street and Battery Place in Manhattan.
  • Commissioner Stern speaks at the Parks Library's screening of the documentary A Walk Through Central Park today at 5:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Call (212) 360-8240 or e-mail Library@parks.nyc.gov to RSVP. The Parks Library can be found in Room 240 of the Arsenal, located at 64th Street and 5th Avenue inside Manhattan's Central Park.
  • Parks kicks off an aggressive lifeguard recruitment program this month with the goal of hiring over 1,000 lifeguards. Parks will offer free Lifeguard Training courses for those interested in safeguarding swimmers this summer at the city's seven beaches and fifty-three outdoor pools.   • Operations reminds all Parks staff that Parks vehicles may be used for official purposes only and is reviewing the rules for operation of city vehicles. They stress that all commuting must be approved, and that vehicle markings may not be changed. A broadcast email was sent to all employees on Friday, January 18. The issue has also been addressed in meetings of the Borough Commissioners, the Chiefs of Operations, the Chiefs of Recreation, the Deans of Discipline, Shops Managers, 5-Boro Supervisors, and Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) Captains.

  • Operations and Management Planning (OMP) begins regular distribution of information about recreation center structural problems gathered from recreation scorecard inspections to the Supervisors of Mechanics.
  • Bronx Operations organizes their storage compound today as part of a continuing effort to improve the Technical Services division. Bronx Technical Services is located in the Ranaqua building at 1 Bronx River Parkway.
