- Congratulations to Adrian Benepe, who was named the new Commissioner of Parks & Recreation on Friday, January 25 by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Commissioner Benepe was previously the Manhattan Borough Commissioner for Parks. More information on his long history with Parks can be found in today's Daily Plant. Commissioner Benepe's new appointment becomes effective on Monday, February 4.
- Parks officials and The Bronx Museum of the Arts join representatives from VIP Community Services and the artist to cut the ribbon for Parks' latest temporary public art installation at 11:00 AM in Tremont Park. Entitled Information for Peace and Democracy, the 8' by 16' graffiti-style murals of two female Bronx residents are on display until June. Tremont Park is located at East Tremont and Arthur Avenues in the Bronx. More info>>
- Bids are due from contractors at 10:30am today for the project to reconstruct the perimeter fence at Queens' Kissena Park. Bids will be opened and reviewed by Management Services at the Olmsted Center, located inside Flushing Meadow-Corona Park in Queens. Kissena Park is bordered by Fresh Meadows Lane, College Point Memorial Boulevard, and Kissena Boulevard.
- Queens crews worked on opening sight lines along the Motor Parkway south of the L.I.E. by cutting low-hanging limbs and trimming overgrown areas. The crews also installed guardrails to restrict access to the area and to prevent dumping. Motor Parkway stretches from Cloverdale-Hollis Court Boulevards to Kingsbury-Richland Avenues.
- Operations and Management Planning (OMP) and the Deputy Commissioner's office will visit McKibben Playground on Tuesday, January 29 to assess quality of a new type of play equipment installed there. McKibben Playground is located between White, McKibben, and Bogart Streets in Brooklyn.
- Calling all lifeguards! Parks is looking to hire 1,000 men and women to help safeguard swimmers at the city's seven beaches and 53 outdoor pools. Free instruction and conditioning classes are offered to interested candidates at five locations throughout the city.
