- Commissioner Stern attends the groundbreaking
ceremony for the reconstruction of Gorman
Playground at 11 AM today. Council Member
John Sabini provided $850,000 for this project.
The renovations include the resurfacing, the
reconstruction of the handball courts, the
addition of a volleyball area and game tables,
a mural along the playground's back wall,
decorative fence panels, the upgrading of
the benches, new planters and new trees and
garden areas. This reconstruction marks the
second phase of work done in the park. In
2000, Council Member Sabini secured $200,000
for the construction of handball courts and
fitness equipment. Gorman Park is located
from Broadway to Wadsworth Terrace between
West 189th and West 190th Streets in Queens.
- The Order to Work (OTW) is given for the
capital project "Astoria Park- Erosion
Control & Landscaping". The $1.1
million project includes the reconstruction
of pavements and curbs, timber barrier railing,
benches, animal art, a flagpole with yardarm,
drainage and water supply, lawn construction,
and plantings. The project will be constructed
by Sonic Construction Company, Inc., which
will be overseen by both Blumberg and Butter,
P.C. and Parks consultant project management.
Astoria Park is at 21st and Hoyt Avenue in
Astoria Queens.
- The Bronx Garage demos a sweeper from the
Elgin Sweeper Company in Bronx parks. Elgin
trains parks employees on proper operation
of the sweeper.
- On Wednesday, November 28th, artist Michael
Poast used his sculpture Baroque Trajectory
as a percussion instrument, and performed
a musical composition he composed for the
occasion. The artwork, composed of interlocking
steel plates welded together and painted bright
colors was installed at Trinity Plaza in downtown
Manhattan in July 2001, and will be on display
through July 2002. The Lower Manhattan Cultural
Council and the Alliance for Downtown New
York supported the sculpture installation.
The project is under the auspices of Parks'
Temporary Art Program. Trinity Place is Trinity
Place at the intersection of Greenwich Street
& Morris Street lower Manhattan.
- On December 1, Central Recreation kicked
off the 5th annual Interborough basketball
program. The program consists of 28 teams
(8 female and 20 male) with ten players per
team. Games will be held in six recreation
centers and runs every Saturday through January
12th. Citywide playoffs begin January 19th
and citywide championships are January 26th
at St. John's Recreation Center.
- Queens Parks Enforcement Patrol issued a
summons to a construction company for cutting
down 4 street trees on Willets Point Boulevard.
