  • Commissioner Stern attends the East River Park Amphitheater kick-off for Challenge America at 7:30 AM today. Over the next six days, a group led by Erin Brockovich hopes to complete extensive renovations to this the amphitheater and soccer field at East 6th Street. The work includes the installation of a new artificial turf field and the demolition of the amphitheater building that has been out of use for at least 20 years. If successful, a show documenting the metamorphosis will air on ABC on December 24. The amphitheater is located at Montgomery Street and the FDR. Read the Media Advisory

  • Tonight at 5 PM, Commissioner Stern lights a 75 foot Christmas tree at Bowling Green Park, at the intersection of Broadway and Whitehall. Read the Media Advisory

  • The Computer Resource (CRC) evaluates a sample computer from Per Scholas. Per Scholas is a new not-for profit organization, located in the Hunts Point Section of the Bronx, that recycles used computers and parts to build "new" machines, significantly below market price. If the equipment is acceptable according to minimum hardware requirements for the centers, CRC could drastically reduce its annual operating costs.

  • On Tuesday, December 11, Parks' Lifeguard School begins conditioning classes and qualifying testing at Metropolitan Pool in Brooklyn and W59th Street Pool in Manhattan. For more information regarding training please call our lifeguard hotline at (212) 830-7880.

  • Parks Opportunities Program (POP) training is held at St. James Recreation Center in the Bronx with Supervisors of Parks Maintenance & Operations (SPMO). St. James RC is located at 2530 Jerome Avenue 192nd Street.

  • Tot Lot playground at Crescent Beach passes the use inspection and is open to the public. Crescent Beach is located on Hylan Boulevard between Retford Avenue and Tennyson Drive in Great Kills, Staten Island.

  • A Parks Enforcement Patrol officer reports a car swerved off the road on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn and completely uprooted a small street tree. The officer issued a summons for destruction of a street tree.
