  • Commissioner Stern joins George Campbell, President of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Barbara Eber-Schmid, Executive Director of Trees New York, and Tree and Bicycle Lovers to Unveil the Two Winning Entries from the International Tree Guard/Bike Rack Design Competition. The kick-off is at 11:30 AM today on 8th Street and 3rd Avenue. More info>>
  • Bid documents are available for contractor pick-up for Reconstruction of the Comfort Station in Mount Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Bids are due from contractors on January 3. The bid documents are located at the Olmsted Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Flushing, New York 11368.
  • Deputy Commissioner's staff is working with Operations & Management Planning (OMP) to upgrade the database of fitness and weight equipment at corresponding recreation centers. Using the newly restructured inventory, OMP is currently labeling the equipment during its regularly scheduled recreation center inspections. Part of the Fitness Equipment Scorecard initiative, the rate of out of service fitness equipment is tracked on a weekly basis for quality control and to identify centers where service is most needed. The citywide out of service rate currently stands at 5 percent for cardiovascular equipment and 2 percent for weight equipment.
  • On December 11, The Queens Borough Commissioner met with representatives from Congressman Joseph Crowley's office, the Planning Division, Councilman-Elect Eric N. Gioia , and Community Board Chairperson Joseph Connelly to inspect problems with the promenade at Queensbridge Park. Due to erosion, the promenade began to fall into the East River about 4 years ago. Congressman Crowley's office is investigating all possible avenues to obtain the estimated $7 Million in federal funding to correct this problem, but needs city, state or federal funds to contribute the approximately $300,000 for the initial design work.
  • The Parks Academy hosted commercial driver's license (CDL) training yesterday. Twenty people attended the class.
  • Parks lights four Christmas trees around the borough of Manhattan:
    Madison Square Park, located on Madison Avenue between East 23rd and 26th St. at 4:30 PM.
    Quisqueya Playground, bounded by West 155th St, Dyckman St., Edgecombe Ave, and Manhattan Avenue at 4:30 p.m.
    Father Duffy Square on Broadway between West 46th and 47th St. at 5:00 PM
    Carmansville Playground on Amsterdam Avenue between West 151st and 152nd St.
  • An Urban Park Ranger rescued two ducks at Flushing Meadows Lake in Queens and transported them to the Queens Boulevard Animal Clinic. More info>>
