  • Commissioner Stern renames Unity Park as Reverend Lena Irons- Unity Park at 10:30 AM today. Reverend Lena Irons- Unity Park, located at Washington Avenue between East 167th and 168th Streets in the Bronx. The Park is currently undergoing an $848,000 project to reconstruction the park.
  • On December 17, Operations & Management Planning (OMP) began Winter Round 2 of the inspection year. This marks the first round that OMP inspects 205 sites in one round, an increase from 183 sites. This is the 3rd increase in the last year. The increases are made in an effort to reduce seasonal result fluctuation between inspection reports.
  • Commissioner Stern joins Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter, Sharon Robinson, Jackie Robinson's Daughter, and Fleet Bank's Executive Vice President Jeff Barker at the Turn Two Foundation holiday party. Derek Jeter will distribute holiday gifts to 350 children from around the city. The event begins at 4:30 PM in the Jackie Robinson Recreation Center on Bradhurst Avenue and 145th Street in Manhattan.
  • OMP releases a recent study of Associate Park Service Workers (APSW) throughout the agency. To complete this study, OMP interviewed 44 APSWs citywide.
  • Forever Wild sign installation is nearly complete, with 772 signs installed citywide. These signs are posted along the perimeter of each of the 44 Forever Wild sites.
  • Bids are due from contractors at 10:30 AM for the project to reconstruct grottos, perimeter paths, and fences in the Bronx. Bids will be opened and reviewed.
  • The Queens Borough Commissioner launches a project to restore the Queensbridge promenade on the East River. The Queens IHRP crew fills in all major fissures with recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and secured the fencing surrounding the problem area to prevent injuries for any trespassing public.
  • The Work Experience Program (WEP) gives a holiday luncheon at Faber Pool in Staten Island. Faber Pool is located at Faber Street and Richmond Terrace.
  • WEP hosts a Toy Drive pick-up at St. James Recreation Center in the Bronx. St. James RC is located at 2530 Jerome Avenue on the corner of 192nd Street.
  • An Urban Park Ranger in Brooklyn located an injured squirrel that was transported to Pet Haven Animal Hospital. The squirrel is being treated for internal neck injuries.
