  • Commissioner Stern speaks at the 12th anniversary celebration of the Charging Bull sculpture dedication in Bowling Green Park at 26 Broadway and Morris Street. More info>>
  • Queens Recreation sponsored a holiday event at the Passarelle building in Flushing this afternoon for hundreds of local public school children. Holiday gifts and plenty of food was distributed to each of the merry children.
  • The Greenstreets Office is monitoring the planting of Donellan Square at 150th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in Manhattan. This large Parks site has been a candidate for a Greenstreet for many years and is finally being done through money donated from Councilman Stanley Michels.

  • Operations reports that it is hosting the twelfth Parks Annual Awards today, December 20, in the Arsenal. The Rookie of the Year is Amy "Friday" Freitag, Historic Houses. The Employee of the Year is Elizabeth "Nine Plus" Perez, Contracts and Payroll & Timekeeping. The Davis Award winner is Geoffrey "Silk" Huston, St. Mary's Recreation Center. The Manager of the Year is William "Zorro" Castro, Bronx, and the Commissioner's Award went to Alan M. "Northside" Moss, First Deputy Commissioner.
  • Bronx Operations conducts a final inspection of Vidalia Playground, located on East 180th Street between Vyse and Daly Avenues. This site, once a trash and debris filled lot, now includes a community garden, play equipment with safety surfacing, handball and basketball courts, a spray shower, comfort stations, and a lawn area.
  • Operations & Management Planning meet on-site with Brooklyn to discuss maintenance of a new Class A lawn. Class A lawns are park lawns that that have recently undergone improvements as a result of capital funding.
  • As of December 11th, Queens Parks has received 156 new historical signs for various parks. 89 signs have been installed. The remaining 67 signs will be installed prior to 2002. More info>>
  • Staten Island installs Goose deterrent at Clove Lakes Park. The park is located on Victory Boulevard, Clove Road, and Slosson Avenue.
  • An Urban Park Ranger Sergeant reported that a cow's tongue and a dismembered chicken were found on one of the tennis courts in Pelham Bay Park. There were no witnesses
