Intern
Brooklyn Public Services is a very busy, fast-paced office with a variety of responsibilities, which include issuing permits for all sports facilities and all special events in the borough (with the exception of Prospect Park & the Parade Grounds). Public Services is also responsible for planning and carrying out the borough's special events (including ground-breaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies, the citywide beach opening ceremony and park dedications). Related responsibilities include the maintenance and transportation of equipment (such as the sound system and podium) used at these events.
INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
The Public Services intern will be responsible for assisting the staff with the intake, review and processing of all types of sports and special events permit applications. This year the office will be taking over the issuance of tennis permits. The intern will assist permit applicants in person and on the telephone, enter into the permit tracking system and database, coordinate permit review with the park managers and any other required offices, and prepare permits for review by the Borough Commissioner. The intern will prepare various reports on a regular basis. In addition, the intern will assist Special Events staff with event set-up and break-down approximately one day per week. Staff must report to work early on event days, and may be asked to work some evening and/or weekend events. Interns will be given the opportunity to work on the planning and preparation of some events (invitation lists, programs, fliers, sign-in sheets, etc.), and will coordinate the borough's summer blood drive. The intern will have the opportunity of learning all facets of the permit operation, as well as, the operational aspect of special events planning and implementation. Interns will be introduced to event planning and the "nitty gitty" of all the required elements for planning a successful event.
QUALIFICATIONS/ SPECIAL SKILLS/ AREAS OF STUDY
Applicants for this position must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be detail oriented and organized, be computer literate, have strong interpersonal skills and be able to manage multiple projects at once. Spanish or Russian speaker is a plus.
This is an unpaid internship.
