Bronx River Alliance - Ecology
Bronx River Alliance
Ecology Intern
The Bronx River Alliance is a public private partnership of the Parks Department and more than 80 organizations that acts as a coordinated voice for the river. The Alliance works collaboratively with public and private partners to protect, improve, and restore the Bronx River corridor and greenway so that they can be healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resources for the Bronx communities through which the river flows.
Since the founding of the Bronx River Alliance in 2001, we have focused on three aims. One is to restore and protect the Bronx River. A second is to create a continuous Bronx River Greenway along the eight-mile stretch of the river in the New York City. And the third aim, interwoven into every activity, is to ensure that the river, the greenway, and the every process of improving them strengthen and build resources for Bronx communities.
The Alliance is housed at the Bronx headquarters of the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and works closely with Parks & Recreation to implement four core program areas: Ecology, Education, Greenway, and Outreach and Technical Assistance.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Interns will work on a project to create stormwater model for Bronx River Watershed. They will determine volumes of stormwater that enter the Bronx River directly or through pipes by mapping impervious surfaces within the watershed and using simple calculations to determine volumes of water correlated with certain sized storms. Project can focus on a segment of the watershed in order to determine where stormwater capture projects could be most efficient. The interns may be asked to conduct a wildlife or vegetation study. This project will include collecting baseline data about wildlife populations (e.g. reptiles and amphibians, birds, etc.) along the Bronx River in order to fill gaps in current data. The interns will collect abundance, health, and habitat information, and compare Bronx River wildlife populations to those in other areas.
QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL SKILLS/AREAS OF STUDY
Strong background in GIS mapping is a must. Requires a background in biology/ecology/ environmental management and policy and the ability to conduct an independent project. Preferences will be given to students working under a mentor from their school.
This is an unpaid internship.
