The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is the last remaining Dutch Colonial style farmhouse in Manhattan.  It was built c 1784 and was originally part of several hundred acres of farmland owned by the Dyckman family.  It was gifted to the City of New York in 1916, the house is an extraordinary reminder of early Manhattan and an important part of its diverse Inwood neighborhood.  The farmhouse is a New York City Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a National Historic Landmark.

The famhouse and grounds re-opened in late Fall 2005 after a two year closure for major restorations.  Summer 2006 will be the first summer that both the museum and grounds will be open.  An intern is needed to assist the Director and Education Director in planning, implementing, and staffing the summer public programs.  Although still in the planning stage, programs will range from a summer concert series to children's activities.  In addition, the farmhouse will also be open for public tours.

Applicants for this position should:

•  Have an interest in history, education, and/or museum studies
•  Have the ability to interact with visitors of all ages and wprk in a team setting
•  Be sensitive to the fact that they are working at a historic site with historic objects

Spanish skills are partiularly helpful but not required.

LOCATION & HOURS

The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is located at 4881 Broadway (at 204th Street), New York, NY 10034.

Minimum of 8 weeks if required. Most of the programs will take place during evening or weekend hours, so flexibility in scheduling is necessary.

This is an unpaid internship.
