Senior Summer Day Counselor
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Greenbelt Summer Day Camp at High Rock Park has a long and renowned history of providing Staten Island children, ages 5-12, with a safe and fun-filled way to enjoy a nature learning experience in the summer. The camp is separated into five, one week long sessions, each with its own unique nature theme. Activities include guided nature hikes, science experiments, field explorations, restorations and take-home art projects.
2006 SESSION SCHEDULE
Session 1: Sense-Sational Woods (July 10th - 14th)
Session 2: Forest Architects (July 17th - 21st)
Session 3: Science: Mysteries or Magic? (July 24th - 28th)
Session 4: Wonderful Wildlife (July 31st - August 4th)
Session 5: Drawn to Nature (August 7th - 11th)
Camp days and hours are Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This position pays $12.00/hour.
INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
In the role of head counselor, candidates will oversee a junior counselor and a volunteer in leading up to 12 campers
Teaching nature topics, planning trail restoration, facilitating recreational activities and art and craft projects, conducting science experiments, and leading field explorations in an outdoor setting.
REQUIREMENTS
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
Physical ability to lead hikes, perform trail restoration work, and lead recreational team-building activities
Experience and interest in working with children
Knowledge of and interest in any of the following areas: natural science, education, child development, and stewardship
Must have completed one year of college and be available for all five sessions, including a three day pre-camp training.
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of northeastern plant and animal species and urban ecology
Familiarity with the Greenbelt and its trail system
Experience working with children and parents
Experienced hikers, naturalists, and nature lovers
Certification in Community CPR and First Aid is a plus
