In 2005, the Bloomberg Administration successfully passed a rezoning plan for the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The historic zoning will ultimately result in the creation of over 50 acres of new parkland along the East River waterfront.

In response to community requests that these new parks respond to the needs of local residents, be environmentally progressive, and be designed in a consistent and inviting manner, the Parks Department has agreed to create waterfront master plan that compliments the existing Waterfront Access Plan and that will serve as a guide for the agency and for future developers along the waterfront.

The plan will establish a conceptual framework for the 1.6-mile public esplanade that will be leveraged by the rezoning plan, as well as a slightly more advanced schematic plan for the 28-acre park that will be created at Bushwick Inlet.

With continued input from Community Board 1, local stakeholders, and the Department of City Planning, the Parks Department is developing a compelling vision for the waterfront that will establish design standards and a programmatic plan that will assure the future of the Greenpoint waterfront as a public park and community asset.

We invite you to explore our first draft of this master plan using the link below. The plan remains a work in progress and will continue to evolve through its scheduled completion in November 2006. Before that date, we will return to the community for an additional public meeting.


Waterfront Development

The proposed Waterfront Access Plan would require new development to include publicly accessible waterfront open spaces.

Zoning changes would produce new development that fit in with the mix of low- and mid-rise residential and industrial buildings in the upland neighborhood.
